Chapter 40

The Escarpment, Garshellach Forest

15:51 GMT / 10:51 EST

“Well?” asked Corporal Lumu.

“I get heat signatures from the western end of the rock face. Muddled, but definitely two figures there, possibly three. On night vision there’s a hint of a standard infantry helmet. Can’t be sure, but I’m betting this is our squad.” Mills’ voice filtered through the radio.

Lumu flicked down his own goggles attached to his helmet; night vision only, but good enough. He sighted down the SA80 A3.

“There’s still only one hostile in that doorway. Looks like they’ve had a firefight of some form. There’s an impact zone to the right of him, possibly a grenade. Doesn’t seem that injured but heavily distracted. He should have eyes on us if he’s using thermal, but I have no sign he is.”

“Corporal, I have eyes on and have the shot,” McCloud whispered through the PRR. The troop’s sharpshooter never overstated. If he had the shot, he had the shot. But they’d all seen that armour and they weren’t packing the sniper rifle McCloud favoured. Would it have punched through any weak spots? Possibly, but without examining a set who knew.

“Negative, McCloud.” Too professional to complain, but Lumu knew he’d be moaning silently in a broad Scottish accent.

“You have incoming, I repeat, y —… have incoming.” Lumu’s channel to the helicopter crackled and faded in and out. He’d left it open for relayed orders from command, but they were at the extreme end of their range. “Four aircraft heading your way, same…” Lumu’s eyes flickered to the tree canopy. “Typh—… in purs—…”

Decision time. We’ll be outgunned if they land. If we could catch them as they do, we may have a chance.

Two Typhoons roared over the tree canopy, swiftly followed by the sound of their Mauser cannons firing off in bursts. Corporal Lumu decided there and then. If the Typhoons were reduced to cannons, it meant they were out of air-to-air missiles or the radar guidance wasn’t effective. Gunfire punctuated his thoughts, echoing from the doorway.

“McCloud, Thompson, target the guard at the door on my mark. Mills, track the figures you’ve picked up. Any hint they are hostiles I want a sit rep immediately. We may be about to have company at the rear, so stay frosty and alert.”

Corporal Lumu of the Elite SAS reserve peered down his sight, night vision goggles giving him a clear view. “Mark.”
